7 tips from architects to modernize your living room
The decoration and layout of your living room no longer seduces you. Now you have only one desire: to bring modernity with touches of color, decorative accessories, a trendier floor or a revamped piece of furniture.
1. Declutter the living room to purify the space
No more massive, bulky and bulky wooden furniture that makes the living room smaller, we adopt low sideboards with more airy lines. They will allow you to free up volume and thereby circulation. If your budget does not allow you to buy new furniture, consider revamping it with patina or removing the doors to lighten them. Good to know: always choose furniture suited to the size and height of the room.

2. Bring in the light to refresh the living room

Modernizing your living room also means playing with light, natural or artificial. Start by taking care of your window treatments. Unhook your thick curtains with flares and install fine sheer curtains with simple hangings, for windows twice as large and bright. You can also play on the material of the sheer: for example, a metallic fabric reflects more light.
Mirrors are also a clever solution: placed in front of a window, they double its light effect. If the budget allows, open the kitchen on the living room to recover the light from this room. You don’t like open kitchens? Install a canopy in the separation workshop: the light comes in, but the odors do not.
3. Use decorative accessories to refresh your stay
To bring modernity at a lower cost, play with decorative accessories – cushions, rugs, vases, frames, decorative objects – always respecting the same style and the same color to be used in shades. You can certainly buy them in large decorative surfaces, but also make them yourself, find them on leboncoin.fr, Emmaüs, at flea markets or even directly in the street. And don’t forget the rugs, they bring warmth, modernity and clearly define the spaces.
4. Bringing touches of color to energize a sad living room
Color splashes on the walls, decorative accessories, furniture or even on the doors can give a boost to the living room. Be careful not to go overboard and keep a good mix of color: keep in mind that your living room should be modern and not “too much”. If you are rather wise or you are afraid of letting go, prefer large rooms (sofa, sideboard, …) in neutral colors like taupe or gray and dare the color on the accessories, to decline by touch: a gray carpet with a hint of color and flashy cushions of the same color (or the same tone). The more adventurous will opt for a colorful armchair or sofa.
Another solution is to use color in paint, painting the door frames, a wall behind a piece of furniture or even creating visual effects (angles broken by color, wall frame not respected, …). Color can also help you “zone” the spaces within the living room. Attention, it is not a question of painting all the walls of a different color, simply to determine more precisely the spaces. For example, a gray carpet on the floor delimits the living room area, a wall the same color as the carpet marks it, the dining area, and the office area freezes with a strip of wallpaper in the same tones.
The gray color can then be declined in the accessories of the stay (cushions, plaids, vases, …). And why not dare a stronger color? Deep blues and deep greens, persimmons, gray yellows, gray pastels, water greens, emeralds, grays of all kinds, petroleum blue and duck, apricot, deep orange red are the trend colors . The neon pink also continues to invite itself into the decor.
5. Revamp your old furniture to rejuvenate the atmosphere of the living room
Save money and modernize your living room at a lower cost with a decorative makeover of your old furniture. If you have old shepherdesses, consider repainting and especially covering them: the choice of fabric alone can modernize a seat.
6. Change the floor to bring a fresh air to the living room
Depending on the existing floor, replacing it can often change everything and boost the atmosphere of the living room. The trendy materials are rather rough effects like solid oak floors, in colors that give the feeling of having lived: gray white, sawn effect. Above all, forget about exotic, old-fashioned woods. You can also choose tiles, but always with effect: imitation parquet, imitation concrete. If you are short on budget, vinyl floors have been greatly modernized and offer the same type of decor. Certainly, placing a pvc floor imitation parquet on an old old-fashioned tile gives a boost to the room.
7. Mix the styles to bring pep to the show
Choosing a single style and not leaving it can indeed “freeze” the decor in an era. All the subtlety is knowing how to mix and mix styles: cutting-edge designer pieces and vintage Scandinavian furniture stand alongside a Louis XV chest of drawers from grandmother and a wrought-iron bed from mom when she was little. Mixing styles also implies playing with codes and especially not to hesitate to divert them. The slightly strict wooden table made more pleasant by mixing the chairs of different materials or colors; the old velvet sofa enhanced with ultra graphic cushions; the 1950s coffee table mixed with a second, more designer table; the old chest of drawers in contrasting wood with a plexi lamp or a Scandinavian design metal wall lamp. If your furniture is wood-based, combine industrial metal furniture to bring modernity, without changing everything!
Arrange a living room without a coffee table, yes it is possible!
In the living room, most often, the coffee table is installed in front of the sofa. A planning habit that deserves to be questioned in certain cases and depending on the configuration. If the seats (sofa or armchair) are essential in a living room to ensure comfort, the coffee table is far from being compulsory. On the contrary!
Creating a living room without a coffee table frees up space and promotes fluid circulation. It is also a strong point for an airy room where each piece of furniture has its place. Explore 15 lounges where the coffee table has given way to an ethnic carpet, a nomadic stool, a view of the fireplace or a wooden chest. What rethink the room to live differently! With a small living room, the desire to open up space or meet one’s own needs without following a typical layout, leads to the disappearance of the coffee table. Sometimes cumbersome, it also turns out to be impressive in a sitting area where the idea is to rest your mind in an open space.
Very useful for some to store magazines, books and coffee cups, it can also become a place where a happy bazaar accumulates on a daily basis and lose all function. Before deciding on the appropriate layout, it is best to ask the right questions. How do we live in the living room? What is the use of the coffee table? Could we do without it? Another tip, a simple test by putting the coffee table in another room for a few days is often conclusive to have an answer.
